Chilworth Mounds

Creating banks of earth close to the buildings where gunpowder was being made helped to contain explosions. These banks were strengthened with earth filled corrugated iron drums which were placed to form blast mounds. The remains of some can still be seen in the gunpowder mills area today. This innovation, which became known within the explosives industry as “Chilworth mounds” was adopted internationally.
